In this case, Gottlieb Daimler attached a combustion engine to a bicycle in 1885. While he would later go on to manufacture automobiles, many of his contemporaries would test other motorized bike designs and grow closer and closer to a true motorcycle (a term that was coined in 1894 by Hildebrand and Wolfmüller).

While the models still didn’t have the girth that many motorcycles do today, mass production on these vehicles began around the turn of the 20th century. By the first and second world war, they became a serious investment for the British armed forces in particular.

This presence of motorcycles in the military played an important role after the war ended in forming some of the first unofficial biker groups. These groups were comprised of veterans who were looking to maintain the brotherhood formed in the European and Pacific theatres. In the 1950s and ‘60s, Japanese dealers exploded into the market, quickly becoming some of the biggest names in the industry, including Honda and Yamaha.
