Cory's Corner: Snowmobile Prep
Now's the time that we're all thinking about snow! While we are waiting for the wonderful snow to fall, it's a great time to do a pre-season check on your snowmobile. Below is a complete checklist to ensure you'll be set up for a great season.
1. Dive Into The Owner's Manual
You can’t go wrong when looking over the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. After all, who knows your snowmobile better than the company that built it? Get a jump start on what your OEM recommends to be completed at each pre-season prep.
2. Check The Fluid Levels
Check your sled's fluid levels, as well as the condition of the fluids. This includes checking the antifreeze, engine oil, brake fluid, and chaincase oil. Did you prep your fuel for storage? If not, remove the fuel and add new fresh fuel. We also recommend replacing your chaincase oil and checking your chain tension due to it stretching over time.
3. Inspect The Drive Belt And Clutch
Remove your drive belt and inspect it for cords showing or if it is deformed. Check your clutches, if they appear to be glazed they can be cleaned up with a scuff pad. Make sure to check the belt deflection as well when you install the belt back in the clutch.
4. Clean The Snowmobile
Not only do you feel better when your snowmobile looks great, but it also allows you to check everything over when you scrub a dub dub! After every ride, your snowmobile will get a little bit of gunk and grime on it. By cleaning your snowmobile regularly, you will be able to identify issues before they become serious. Don't forget to always use your cover when your snowmobile is not in use.
5. Keep The Parts Lubricated
Always grease and lube everything! It's important that all your snowmobile's moving parts stay well-lubricated. This includes the front and rear suspension, steering components, and drivetrain. Make sure to locate all of the Zerk fittings. Most are easy to find, while others can be harder to find. Refer to your shop manual if you are unsure.
6. Care For The Track And Skis
There are a few items you'll want to check to ensure your snowmobile's track and skis are well-maintained.
- Check your track, your track's tension, and alignment. Inspect the track to make sure there are no missing lugs, studs, or clips if you are running them. This is also a great time to check your slides.
- Check the wear marks to make sure you have plenty of slides available. If not, remove and replace them. Check your carbides for a nice sharp edge. If they are flat, it is time to go ahead and replace them.
7. Check Cables, Lights, And Controls
Make sure all your cables are operating as they should. Check your lights, including the tail light, to ensure they are working and bright enough to be seen on the trail. Finally, make sure all other controls work and you are familiar with their locations and what they do.
